It has been entertaining to watch the evolution of the “NoSQL” meme over the last several months. It started with, essentially, “just say ‘no’ to SQL,” with lots of SQL and relational DBMS bashing; then it quietly and diplomatically backed off to “Not Only SQL,” asserting a complementary fit; and now, the post referenced below suggests, perhaps the term is going to be retired. I’ve been waiting for others to consider “New Opportunities for SQL” as the new definition for “NoSQL," as a potential acknowledgement that many organizations, as they race ahead with “next-generation” database systems, will end up starting over with definitely not-dead-yet extended relational DBMSs. CouchOne, the sponsor company of, CouchDB no longer considers itself "NoSQL" company. "For our part, we'll let others chase the 'NoSQ' thing," Mikeal Rogers wrote on the CouchOne blog. No, CouchDB isn't adding structured query language anytime soon. It's more a matter of semantics. Since the term was coined, various projects with very different goals have been lumped together under the NoSQL banner. We've been guilty of this ourselves, of course. Although the NoSQL moniker has probably helping several projects gain visibility, it's lead to some misconceptions.
